Workers' Memorial Day - April 28, 2004
The IAM held a special ceremony on April 28th at the William W. Winpisinger Center in Hollywood, Maryland to honor members who died on the job.

The memorial service took place at the IAM Workers' Memorial Lighthouse, where fallen workers are immortalized with individual bricks bearing their name and date of their death.

The first Workers Memorial Day was observed in 1989. April 28 was chosen because it is the anniversary of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the day of a similar remembrance in Canada.  Each year more than 60,000 workers die from job injuries and illnesses and another 6 million are injured.

Settled Suit Brings Benefits for Rail Workers
The Kansas State Treasurer and the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company settled a federal lawsuit that could affect the families or heirs of tens of thousands of deceased railroad workers nationwide.

In an agreement reached earlier this month, MetLife agreed to set up a program to notify railroad workers and their families who might be eligible for a $2,000 death benefit under certain MetLife group life policies. The unpaid benefit, which was included in certain contracts between railroads and labor unions as far back as 1966, covered workers at 20 rail unions, including the IAM.

Additionally, MetLife has agreed to publish notices in federal Railroad Retirement Pension Board newsletters and on state insurance department Internet sites. If you believe that you may be eligible for benefits or have information regarding individuals who may be eligible, please contact MetLife’s Railroad Operations Center at 1-800-310-7770. Proof of eligibility (including proof of death) will be necessary to process each claim and MetLife will make all claim determinations. MetLife representatives will answer your questions and, if appropriate, assist you in filing a claim.

Railroad Retirement Annuity Estimates Available Online

Railroad employees can now get estimates of their future annuities over the Internet.

Employees can access this new service, called "Retirement Planner," by visiting the Railroad Retirement Board's (RRB) web site at http://www.rrb.gov/mep/ben_services.asp and establishing an RRB Internet Service account.

Once employees establish their online accounts, they will be able to get annuity estimates for themselves and their spouses, as well as conduct other business with the Board, over the Internet. In addition, employees can view and print a summary of their current record of railroad retirement service months, compensation, and social security wages.

Covered rail employees must first go online to get a Password Request Code, which they will receive by mail in about 7 to 10 days. Workers who have already established online accounts do not need to do so again.
